"Mind Over Matter" - You probably have heard this phrase before, and it certainly applies to the motivation and determination needed to reach your fitness goals. If you THINK about it, the most common reasons (excuses) that people fall off of their fitness regiment and dietary guidelines is some break down in their will. For most people, the drop off is not because they dont know what is the "right" thing to do, rather it is the subconscious belief that something is getting in the way. It is this mental block that needs to be overcome...it is this time when we need to have a strong mindset to reach our goals.
"Mind-Body Connection" - You probably have also heard this phrase before as well. Although this phrase has been more recently replaced by the term Mindfulness, it demonstrates the connection that our "Mind" has with our body. This connection is prevalent in so many different disciplines, that it is very hard to deny that a link actually exists. From religious teachings (such as Buddhism), to medical therapies (such as Biofeedback), to plain conventional wisdom (THINK about the difference between the Mind and the brain), it is quite easy to gain an appreciation of how a positive mental state will affect your physical body.
It is for these reasons that many fields of medicine, behavior and exercises sciences have recently spent a significant amount of energy and effort studying the Mind and brain. More and more has been published amount the importance of "training the Brain", whether for the maintenance of cognition, increased athletic performance, or simply feeling "good"!
Focusing our efforts on our brains can have dramatic results to achieving our goals. With this in Mind, be open to articles on this website that emphasize the Mindfulness connection.
